Ukrainian researchers to be offered academic refuge in Denmark

Press release by Universities Denmark, August 22, 2022

A joint initiative by three major Danish foundations, (Novo Nordisk Foundation, Carlsberg Foundation and Villum Foundation) and Universities Denmark offer opportunities to Ukrainian researchers affected by the war in their homeland.

The new initiative is a fellowship programme and will be hosted under Scholars at Risk and will go by the name “Scholars at Risk Ukraine” (SARU).

SARU will allow Ukrainian researchers to apply for a fellowship at a Danish university, where they will be able to continue their academic research in a secure and international environment for a period of up to one year.

Anders Bjarklev, head of the Danish Rectors Conference:

“I’m very happy that we can launch this initiative. Our hope is that by offering these fellowships, we can contribute to Ukrainian scholars being able to continue their academic work, so that they may continue to gain insights and produce knowledge that will help Ukraine in the future”

Bjarklev continues:

“I want to thank the foundations for working with us to establish this initiative and the speedy process in doing so. Without these three foundations it would have been impossible, so we are very grateful for having them onboard.”

The SARU fellowship programme is financed by Novo Nordisk Foundation, Carlsberg Foundation and Villum Foundation and enables remote scholarships as well as fellowships for approx. 24 researchers affected by the war in Ukraine to continue their academic research in a secure and international environment at Danish universities for a period of up to one year in a Research Assistant or Postdoc position.

Fellows will play an active part in the university’s research environment.

Applications are to be received before 30th of September 2022.
