Inspirationskatalog om ph.d.-studerendes trivsel

I Danmark uddanner vi omkring 2.000 ph.d.er hvert år. Over en periode på tre til fire år forsker de, formidler viden, samarbejder inden for deres forskningsmiljø og skriver en afhandling, der er et originalt bidrag til deres forskningsfelt. En række undersøgelser viser desværre, at mange ph.d.-studerende oplever problemer med trivsel og med deres arbejdsliv i løbet af deres ph.d.-ansættelse.
For at understøtte unge forskeres trivsel og facilitere videndeling har DM og Danske Universiteter samarbejdet om et inspirationskatalog, der omhandler forskellige aspekter og områder, hvor universiteterne kan arbejde med ph.d.-trivsel og som indeholder eksempler fra de danske universiteter. Kataloget bygger på en forudsætning om, at trivselsspørgsmål ikke kan individualiseres – fokus bør være på det overordnede arbejdsmiljø, kulturen i forskningsgrupper, kollegialitet og institutionelle rammer.
Kataloget skal inspirere ph.d.-skoleledere, forskningsledere, vejledere og andre, der arbejder med administration og ledelse af unge forskere. Det kan også vise unge forskere nogle af de initiativer, som de kan opfordre deres arbejdsplads til at implementere, for at skabe bedre vilkår for trivsel blandt yngre forskere.
Dekan Philip Binning, Danmarks Tekniske Universitet, Forperson for Danske Universiteteres arbejdsgruppe vedr. forskeruddannelse siger:
”Ph.d.-studiet er svært, fordi det kræver nye originale ideer i store projekter, der er risikable og fyldt med usikkerhed. Disse forhold er meget udfordrende for enhver ph.d.-studerende. Danske Universiteter og DM har undersøgt best practice på de danske universiteter, og kan se, at ph.d.-studerende støttes bedst, når de tilbydes professionel vejledning, er omgivet af stærke kollegiale netværk, når de ph.d.-studerende har reel indflydelse, forstår de forventninger der er til dem, får oplæring i projektledelse og undervisning, og sparring til at udvikle deres videre karriere.”
Brian Arly Jakobsen, lektor ved Københavns Universitet, forperson for DM Universitet siger:
”Det er vigtigt for et ph.d.-projekts succes, at den enkelte studerende understøttes af stærke institutionelle rammer med et klart fokus på ph.d.-studerendes arbejdsliv. Adgang til karriereudvikling og akademiske støttetjenester er afgørende, det samme er stærke kollegiale fællesskaber og sunde arbejdskulturer. Hos DM er vi glade for at kunne præsentere dette katalog i samarbejde med Danske Universiteter. Vi tror på, at dette initiativ vil være med til at sætte ph.d.-trivsel på dagsordenen og imødegå den usikkerhed og arbejdspres, som mange ph.d.-studerende oplever.”

Inspirational catalogue on the well-being of PhD students

In Denmark, we educate approximately 2,000 PhDs each year. Over a period of three to four years, they conduct research, convey knowledge, collaborate within their research community and write a dissertation that is an original contribution to their field of research.
A number of studies show that many PhD students experience issues with well-being and work life during their PhD-employment. In order to support the wellbeing of young researchers and to facilitate knowledge sharing, DM and Danish universities have collaborated on an inspirational catalog addressing different aspects and arenas where universities can work with well-being for PhDs and with examples from the Danish universities.
The catalogue is based on the presumption that well-being issues cannot be individualised—the focus should be on the overall work environment, the cultures in research groups, collegiality, and institutional frameworks.
This catalogue is meant to inspire PhD school leaders, research leaders, supervisors and others who work with the administration and management of young researchers. It can also shed light for young researchers on some initiatives that their workplaces may implement in order to create better conditions for the wellbeing amongst junior researchers.
Quote from Dean Philip Binning, Senior Vice President, Technical University of Denmark and chair of Universities Denmark’s working group on PhD education:
“A PhD study is difficult because it demands exciting new ideas in big projects that are risky and uncertain. These conditions are very challenging for any PhD student. Universities Denmark and DM have examined best practice at Danish universities, and show that PhD students are best supported when they are offered professional supervision and when students are surrounded by strong collegial networks. It is equally important that the PhD students have real influence on their working life, understand what is expected of them, are provided education on project management and teaching, and how to develop their further careers.”

We believe this initiative will help put PhD well-being on the agenda and address the uncertainty and work pressure experienced by many PhD students.”
